The Lady in the Fag

While it's true I can be a bit more of a fag and not quite Ladylike at times...I much more Lady on the inside then people would ever suspect...I did a shoot in my home with photographer Veronica Ibarra. I agreed to do it when I looked at her blog and saw her references overlap a facet of me that I don't usually bring to the outside world... Magical collaborations can happen unexpectedly when two girls get together, laugh, listen to Chavela Vargas and talk passiontly about the things they love...I sold vintage clothing and antiques for 10 years...I kept most of my Victorian pieces like this jet beaded velvet cape, the combs in my hair are old celluloid ones that my dad has been buying me since forever. The backdrop is from my collection of handmade crochet and lace work...I tea dyed it myself...still don't believe I'm a Lady?!!Well then, welcome to my pale butter of a bedroom. It's sort of like a pretty doll house filled with my little beaded evening bags from the 20's, old religous Mexican folk art, Victorian whimsies and tiny bits of creepiness in between old woolen quilts...I bought the prate hat at a costume warehouse from old Broadway shows and the sailor suit is actually a bathing suit from about 1910 when wool nautical suits were au courant for the beach... But sometimes you just gotta buckle up your shoes leave the Lady at home and hit the dancefloor with the Fag!!!!.... Thanks Veronica, I loved working with you...

Gingeriffic

I SAY YES: M.I.A.'s new Born Free video reminds us with bloody poetics of the fight to not fight at all.

M.I.A, Born Free from ROMAIN-GAVRAS on Vimeo.

GOES WELL WITH: Catherine Tate show's reccuring Ginger skit. Tate (especially her Lauren Cooper character) is one reason I don't blog enough...
ALSO GOES WELL WITH: 2 of my favourite red head's in one. Karen Elson as Grace Coddington!SOUNDTRACK: For once this category doesn't need a soundtrack. The video is the soundtrack for all of us to stand up to the world for what you believe in. Love you M.I.A...

Happy Earth Day

Yes, that's a younger Ladyfag. Yes she was an eco-avenger hippie. Yes, I had dreads down to my butt. Yes, my girlfriend took that pic of me while I was on a toilet in the mountains of Mexico...No, I'm not ashamed of any of this. While my dreads might be long gone, my environmentally conscious heart still beats proud...and remember kids... Earth before Girth...Happy Earth day!

somber soles

I've never felt more saddened by a shoe that makes me so happy. These are from Alexander McQueen's last collection. While the Armadillo shoes will always be his iconic piece of footwork, these byzantine inspired beauty's follow not far in their steps...

Good Hair

As the saying goes...The grass is always greener on the other side. I remember when all the young girls at school were getting perms and my mom wouldn't let me cause she said the chemicals would ruin my hair. She was right. I like my hair the way it is and keep it fairly chemical free. The same can't be said for alot of women....I just watched Chris Rock's documentary Good Hair. It's about the African American obsession with having "good hair", what it entails to get it and the billion dollar industry of weaves and the dangerous chemical relaxers it's created. It's also a movie about community and a social commentary on what the term 'good hair' means? While the movie raises more debate then answers, I think Ice-T said it best when talking about how women should stop judging other women on if they keep it natural or use relaxers. "Because if a women ain't happy with herself, she's gonna bring nothing but pain to every-fuckin-body around her"....ain't that the truth!! Pass me the Crown Royal...

It's a family affair!

My friends kept lamenting the lack of places to hang out, hear good music, dance and be all together, so I recently started a party called Family Function. DJ Michael Magnan is our family resident, with special guest DJ's from our dysfunctional family alternating to keep asses shaking!!! It seems like our little family function has grown up quickly to be one of the funnest (yes, that's a word) things to do in NY on a Saturday night. Thanks NYC!!... Saturday night fever!!!Party pics by Jason the Black Teen wolf...click on collages if you want to get a closer peak of the fun!!!

Untitled is the title

Everyone's a critic. I once saw an episode of Candid Camera where they did a wine testing but all the wines were the same. I laughed as people put on air's of wine conniseurs and explained how one of them was far more well rounded the other. That's how I feel when I go to fragrance launches. I'm a big fan of Maison Martin Margiela and was excited to attend the launch of their new fragrance, the very Margielesque named UNTITLED. The press release uses words like the woody green floral, the bitterness of box green, the vibrancy of lentiscus and incense....It ended the description by saying it was "like a huge armful of plants harvested just after the rain" Going to Margiela events are always fabulous, they always have something up their sleeve. Usually an outfit with only one sleeve, probably attached at the leg! I fell in love with the acrylic moulds of their famous split toes boots and jokingly asked one of my friends who works there how bad it would be if i stole em, luckily they told me they're gonna be for sale in the near future.
Anyways, not really sure where I would stash them in my barely there nude pantyhose ensemble.
Nearly everything at Margiela was white upon white. From the white lab coats of the staff, to the bouquets of white flowers they made us when we left. As I stomped my Margiela'd feet out of there they also gave out white felt buttons drowned in Untitled. I woke up the next morning with it by my bed. Candid Camera be damned, I could have sworn it just rained and someone had brought me an armful of freshly cut greenery....sweet sigh.
Photo of Margiela was published last year in the NY Times and is an old photo of him...the only photo of him known to man.
Photo of me at event is by Katya Moorman from her great blog Style Defined.
Photo of shoe moulds snapped on my phone while pondering theft.

Whoa Nelly

I SAY YES: Frankie Morello's brilliant white pumps from Spring 2010. All the shoes in the collection were cuntasia, and would make daddy Hermes proud!! I couldn't find any of them for sale however which leads me to think they were just runway. If anyone has any info let a Lady know....she wants em bad!!!GOES WELL WITH: Pony Girls Club. Where according to the website "Young girls are harnessed and trained to be Ponygirl's"
Now while I personally prefer to drink champagne from a flute not a trough, nor do I like being butt fed carrots. I'm not one to judge, and furthermore I'm quite jealous of the hooves they get to wear. They cost $825 Euros but apparently are easy to trot in!SOUNDTRACK: White Horse By: Laid Back

Anastasia & Snegurochka

This a story about 3 girls. Anastasia, Snegurochka, and Ladyfag. When I was a little Ladyfag I had seen a documentary on Anastasia and the last Tsar's of Russia. In 1918, the whole family was brought into a room thinking they were about to get their photo taken, and when they sat to pose were all gunned down. Till the 90's there was a myth that the little girl Anastasia had actually escaped to the woods and people kept coming forth claiming to be her. As a little girl, I was fascinated by her....Snegurochka is a famous Russian fairy tale about the daughter of Father Winter. She didn't have the ability to love and her mother took pity on her sadness and gave her a real heart. She fell in love with a little boy and melted...The story makes MY heart melt...Both sides of my family came from countries where they were persecuted for who they were. My father's side came from Russia where they had to escape and my grandmother was a Hungarian Holocaust survivor. The secrecy in my family trying to shelter me from their bad memories, and the borders being far different than today's geography, lead to much confusion in my youth about where I had actually come from. I am only now as an adult beginning to understand.I have always been drawn to Eastern European traditions and aesthetics. I love myths and fairytales and saw a common thread between three girls whose lives were all affected by the families they were born into. I liked to imagine myself as the little Anastasia managing to escape to the snowy woods and having Snegurochka come visit her to bring her comfort. I assumed she would have known the story, and during the making of it I found out that her father had commissioned an opera about it with music by Tchaikovsky which we used in the film. In truth we now know she did die that day with her family and so I decided to take her place and pose for the last photo that was never taken of her. The day before filming the weather was beautiful when all I wanted was snow. Seems like Snegurochka heard my cry and NY had it's last snowstorm of the season and the whole crew happily trudged through piles of white to tell a story....

Thank you to Jason Last for making this film and understanding how important the story behind it was to me, to Fabian Montique for taking photos in the worst of conditions. Thanks to my assistant Sophia, to Kryaki Savarni for beating my face, and to my ever loyal hairdresser Brian Buenaventura. Lastly, thank you to Elisa Goodkind and the whole Stylelikeu crew for believing in the magic of people telling their stories through fashion....

Nevermind

Some might say grunge died 16 years ago today with the death of Kurt Cobain. Others might argue it died in December 1992 with the infamous "Grunge and Glory" Vogue shoot by Steven Meisel. A young me bought that issue of Vogue and fell in love with Kristen McMenamy. She was my type of rebel, fashionable, beautiful, androgynous and while her fuck you was much subtler than Courtney Loves it sat well with me, as it does till this day. Kurt Cobain wouldn't have liked me....he liked girls like Courtney. I hated her cause she had Kurt, then years later I hated her cause I blamed her for his death, 15 years later I hated her cause we were hanging out at a party and she spilt her drink all over my new shoes. (For better or worse I love Courtney, and all of those reasons I hated her were ridiculous and unjustified, except the last one...they were YSL!) It's strange to think of all the time that's passed. In 91' Compact disc's were the new thing and Nirvana was the one of the first ones I ever bought. I watched the movie Slacker's and wanted to move to Seattle, but it had just as much to do with the fact that I wanted to wear floral baby doll dresses and fuck Matt Damon or Chris Cornell then ever wanting to sleep in a punk squat with dirty dogs, junkies and scabies. Grunge is dead, and I am no longer an angst riddled teenager, but who I grew up to be is something I think Kurt might have actually appoved of. He should, he helped inspire my teenage spirit and I think I turned out smelling pretty good....and if you don't get the reference...oh well whatever, NEVERMIND!allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"> This song and video will forever be the anthem of teenage angst....It sounds as true to me now as it did then... I wish I still had my old purple Doc Martens...R.I.P. Kurt.

UPDATE: I have just learnt that Lady Gaga is one of the headliners this year at Lolapalooza...Is nothing sacred?
